Why Did the Toronto Plane Crash Happen, and How Did Everyone Survive?

On February 17, 2025, Delta Air Lines Flight DL4819, operated by Endeavor Air using a Bombardier CRJ-900LR aircraft, experienced a catastrophic incident upon landing at Toronto Pearson International Airport. Despite the aircraft flipping upside down and catching fire, all 80 individuals on board survived, with 21 passengers sustaining injuries. This remarkable outcome can be attributed to several critical factors.

Incident Overview

Flight DL4819 departed from Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport and approached Toronto amid challenging weather conditions. The region had recently been affected by a significant snowstorm, resulting in over 22 centimetres of snowfall and strong crosswinds at the time of landing. As the aircraft touched down around 2:15 p.m. local time, it skidded on the snow-covered runway, causing it to overturn and come to rest inverted. Emergency responders swiftly arrived, ensuring all passengers and crew were evacuated safely. Among the injured, three individuals, including a child, were initially reported in critical condition but have since been stabilised.

Factors Contributing to Survival

  1. Aircraft Structural Integrity: The Bombardier CRJ-900LR is engineered with robust safety features designed to withstand severe impacts. Its structural resilience played a pivotal role in preserving the fuselage’s integrity, thereby protecting occupants during the crash.
  2. Effective Use of Seatbelts: Proper seatbelt use was instrumental in minimising injuries. Sara Nelson, president of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, emphasised that seatbelts are designed to endure significant forces, securing passengers during abrupt movements and impacts.
  3. Prompt Emergency Response: The swift deployment of emergency services at Toronto Pearson International Airport ensured that passengers received prompt assistance and evacuation, thereby preventing further harm. Firefighters and medical personnel arrived on-site within minutes, addressing injuries and extinguishing the fire efficiently.
  4. Crew Training and Professionalism: The flight and cabin crew’s adherence to emergency protocols enabled a systematic evacuation. Their poise and direction were vital in effectively managing the situation, as demonstrated by passenger accounts detailing the crew’s decisive actions during the crisis.

Ongoing Investigation

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada, with assistance from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration, has initiated a comprehensive investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident. Preliminary considerations include adverse weather conditions, such as strong crosswinds and reduced visibility due to blowing snow, which may have contributed to the aircraft’s destabilisation during landing. The recovery and analysis of the flight data and cockpit voice recorders will provide critical insights into the sequence of events leading up to the crash.
